2020 Autumn Release

Aberlour-Portuguese-red-Wine-7yo

Aberlour 2012 - 7 year old

54% ABV Cask No. #800914

Cask Type

Bourbon Hogshead (7 years 6 months)/Portuguese Red Wine (Madeira Barrique; 4 months)

Colour

Late Summer Sunset

Nose

A fragrant Granola sweet toasted barley together with the spicy vanilla from the Bourbon cask and the succulent fruitiness from the Portuguese wine cask are held in a halo of oak tannins. Young and vibrant. Hints of riverbank flowers and heather in bloom balance beautifully with the Portuguese wine overture.

Palate

Fresh, vibrant and absolutely delicious. For such a young spirit, what it lacks in maturity it makes up for in personality and given its age, the oak defers to the quality of the distillate and the wine overture closes the show beautifully with the warmth and mellowness of its birthplace.

Finish

Lasting and warming with a smooth, creamy sherry notes, soft wood and a touch of salt.

Glen Garioch 8 years old

55% ABV Cask No.#2697

Cask Type

Refill Bourbon Hogshead

Colour

Light Amber with gold highlights

Nose

Oaky, nutty with a touch of toasted almond. All the Highland characters are in abundance.  The crisp sweet dryness of the toasted barley, the mellow light smokey notes from the charred oak leading you into sweet vanilla, caramelised by the toasting of the staves. A hint of melon & pear, drizzled with warm vanilla. At this age the harmony between the spirit of the oak is perfect and provides a platform on which the other, more gentle flavours can evolve. Like river bank flowers, lily and marigold, mint and heather in bloom.

Palate

Hints of hazelnut with a coating of smoking peat and also a biscuity sweetness. However, it’s the smoothness of the texture of this medium bodied whisky that is really beautiful. It coats the palate with an almost syrup like mouthfeel.

Finish

Lingers long after the glass is empty. A rare and wonderful spirit seldom seen. A single malt that is in its prime and one you will remember for its true North East character.

58% ABV Cask No. #2851 (sister cask of the above)

Cask Type

Refill Bourbon (8 years), 1st Fill Moscatel Wine Barrique (4 months)

Colour

Stunning luminous gold

Nose

A brilliant combination of vanilla spiciness from the bourbon cask and a delicious fruit overture from the Moscatel cask. The charred oak overture from the bourbon brings a delightful sweet vanilla/spicy combination that embraces the cask tannins.

Palate

The sweet crispness of the barley emerges bringing and adding a crispy cereal flavour that is delightful and provides a platform on which the Muscatel overture shines. Hints of green apple, spring gardens and heather in bloom. It’s young, vibrant and anxious to please, which it does.

Finish

Finishes beautifully with malt and Moscatel combination: candied orange peel, green tea note and dried dark raisins.

NB: For a spirit that is so young it’s impressive but Glenrothes is a Grade A Distillery so one should not be hesitant due to its youthfulness.
